Saveock is a multi-period site dating from the Mesolithic to the 17th century. No experience is necessary as students are taught on site planning, section drawing, context sheets and excavation techniques during the first week, and can then put their new skills to the test in the following weeks, where students have the opportunity to dig on different periods of the site. As well as excavation, an illustrated talk is given on Experimental Archaeology each week by the site director Jacqui Wood, who has worked on the ‘Ice Man’ artefacts in Italy. Anyone from age 14 (with an accompanying adult) is welcome, and there is always post excavation work for those less able. This is a permanent archaeology centre and there are full indoor facilities during wet weather. Free wifi is available during break times, as well as phone charging facilities.
