Primary Duties    

This position is a two year appointment and is supported by the Marshall Steel Endowment.

Under general direction of the conservator, carries out conservation techniques including examination, writing treatment proposals, doing treatment and photodocumentation, and writing treatment reports

Spends 80% of time in the Archaeological conservation lab working on iron artifacts from Martin's Hundred and Matthew's Manor, two of the Foundation's most important 17th-century sites.  Activities relating to these collections will include documentation, retreatment, research and rehabilitating existing microclimates.

Spends remaining 20% of time on other lab activities such as treatment of incoming finds and educational support for the conservation exhibit.

A research project or paper will be a required component of the internship, with the goal of professional presentation and/or publication.
Qualifications    

The candidate should be a graduate of a recognized conservation training program or have equivalent apprenticeship training with appropriate experience.

Knowledge of and experience working with 17th- through early 19th-century objects.

Experience in research, examination, treatment proposal writing, treatments and final reports, and use of personal computer.

Good communications skills, both oral and written.

Experience delivering public programming.

Ability to work independently and with peers.

Highly desirable:  Experience working with 17th- through 19th-century artifacts, with specific knowledge of iron treatments; experience developing public and/or educational programs; knowledge of the Virginia Standards of Learning.
