The Leverhulme Trust Research Grant PhD Studentship
A Collaborative Environment for Assisted 3D Reconstruction of Cuneiform Tablets
University of Birmingham

The Leverhulme Trust PhD Studentship is a fully funded studentship, covering fees and standard living costs. A PhD student from the Computer Science/Computer Engineering background is required for this high-profile research that will bring outstanding intellectual capacity to the project. The student will assist in the research and delivery of the interactive 3D environment for collaborative 3D Cuneiform reconstruction and will have access to Birmingham's BEAR HPC and laser scanners, and various human interface devices (Multitouch Tables, etc). The candidate will use world-class facilities at the University of Birmingham for the digitisation, reconstruction and dissemination of fragments of Cuneiform tablets. The 2,000 fragment collections in Heidelberg which belong to a single temple archived from the time of Nebuchadnezzar and possibly from collections from other Museums and archives will be used for testing the collaborative i3D interface.

The PhD will be co-supervised by staff from The Heritage and Cultural Learning Hub (College of Arts and Law) and from the Electronic, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science (College of Engineering and Physical Sciences).
