Preservation Wayne is Detroit's oldest and largest architectural preservation organization. As the first Detroit recipient of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Honor Award, we have been working to honor Detroit's rich architectural heritage since 1975. Over the last three decades, the scope of Preservation Wayne has grown to encompass the entire city, from historic homes to skyscrapers to sites of cultural significance. Mission Statement Preservation Wayne’s mission is to preserve, promote and protect the neighborhoods and structures that define Detroit. Vision Statement We preserve and revitalize Detroit's built environment through our historic rehabilitation workshops, feasibility studies and research of historic structures. We promote awareness of Detroit's past and current achievements through tours, lectures, publications and full-time accessibility to the media. We protect the built environment through advocacy for effective real estate policies, code development and enforcement, holistic urban planning and enlightened taxation policies. Preservation and Urbanism Preservation Wayne and its partner organizations recognize the need to establish and promote a single voice for an Urban Agenda in greater Detroit. The region’s future relies on its ability to embrace the city of Detroit and the concept of urbanity as a viable alternative to the status quo. As proven in countless cities around the world, historic preservation is an integral component to maintaining a healthy urban environment. But preservation is only one part of the picture. In its outreach, Preservation Wayne seeks to engage and support complimentary issues and initiatives in and around Detroit, from better transit options to more progressive and efficient regional governance, from environmental conservation to better urban design solutions and sustainable development, and from supporting local entrepreneurial activity and initiatives to advocating for a more open and accepting global perspective in the community.

Preservation Wayne is currently seeking energetic, dedicated and skilled interns for the Winter 2012 semester to assist with a variety of projects to help preserve, promote and protect the neighborhoods and structures that define Detroit. This opportunity is available to both undergraduate and graduate students studying historic preservation or a related discipline such as urban studies, urban planning, architectural and cultural history, or community development.

This unpaid internship opportunity has flexible start and end dates and may qualify for college credit.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Opportunity for a student to engage in historic preservation advocacy and education on all levels. Duties may include: site research; historic archival research; archive organization; conditions assessments; building inventory surveys; public policy research; general administrative and developmental support; developing resource materials; and assisting with the coordination of project programs.
