INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:
Idaho National Laboratory (INL) internships are geared for students at all academic levels (high school, undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate) in a variety of fields. The pressing challenge for nuclear energy sets the context for INL's strategy including:
- World-leading nuclear science and technology programs
- National/Homeland Security programs
- Energy and Environmental programs
INL internships, like the lab's research, span a wide range of scientific, technology, engineering, math, and support fields:
- Archeological
- Biology
- Biomass (including Plant Science)
- Business Operations & Business Management *
- Chemistry
- Communications
- Computer Science
- Critical Infrastructures*
- Cyber Security *
- Engineering (all disciplines)
- Environmental Science
- Geoscience
- Industrial Safety
- Information Management
- Instrumentation and Control
- Machining Technology
- Material Science
- Modeling & Simulation
- National Security *
- Nuclear Engineering
- Nuclear Non-Proliferation *
- Occupational Health
- Physics
- Reactor Operator
- Research Library
All internships are designed to be an educational enhancement opportunity and are paid positions.
* Based on the nature of these internships US Citizenship is required. Unmarked internships are evaluated against United States Export Control Laws and Homeland Security to determine US Citizenship requirement.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Enrolled student status at an accedited or state recognized high school program
High school applicants must be 16 years of age at the time of application
High school internships are for periods of 8 weeks
OR
Enrolled student status at an accredited professional/technical 2 year Community College program
Completed a minimum of 12 college credits prior to the initial start date of the internship
Community college internships are10 to 16 weeks in duration
Many of the INL Community College interns are hired through the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Community College Internship Program. It is recommend that you also apply to their program at http://science.energy.gov/wdts/cci/.
OR
Enrolled student status at an accredited US college or university (Undergraduate, Graduate, or Doctorate degree)
Completed a minimum of 12 college credits prior to the initial start date of the internship
Undergraduate internships are10 to 16 weeks in duration
Graduate/Doctorate candidate internships offer part- or full-time research experience at INLor a college/university campus. These are renewable for up to three years for each degree
Many of the INL Undergraduate internships focused on science, technology, engineering, and/or math are hired through the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship Program. It is recommended that you also apply to their program at http://science.energy.gov/wdts/suli/.
AND
Ability to pass a background check
Minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA (Individual mentors may require a higher GPA)
Foreign National students may be eligible for internships if attending an accredited US college or university and have a Curricular Practical Training Authorization.
A limited number of internships are in association with collaborations with the world's premier academic institutions. Students of these collaboration institutions may be given preference on these collaboration internship opportunities.
Environmental, Safety & Health
Must be familiar with, and comply with all relevant health and safety requirements. Must be knowledgeable of emergency action policies and procedures, methods for reporting/resolving work practices or conditions to available cognizant professionals.
