when/where did you first hear of this website?

This is a question I also posted on our Facebook fan page (from a suggestion by R. Joe Brandon on the ShovelBums page). I also never met the vast majority of you in person, and only know you through the website. I would like to know when you first heard of archaeologyfieldwork.com, and how you found out about this site. Some of you have been visiting us for a very long time (since the arch.hutchey.com days or earlier)!

Thanks, Jennifer :)

It has been so long now I do not remember.  I know I visited the first site frequently but was not registered (a lurker).  I would just check in to see what was going on, and I have continued to follow it, though now as a registered user.  I still check in once or twice a day.

I can't remember either.  I have been on since 2004 I think, when I was in undergrad, but I think I may have heard of you through a fellow student or maybe it was just google :-/

Another vote for "its been so long I can't remember" - at least 3-4 iterations of the site back (10+ years I would suspect).  BUT I can say that I have recommended the site to many folks since I found it, many of whom have thanked me for introducing them to it.

No clue? At least a couple of years back. Maybe through a google search, maybe word of mouth. I lurked for a while and only recently started posting.

I unearthed a few screenshots from years past, courtesy of archive.org. Hard to believe we are going on 17 years...

2001:

2002:

2006 (stayed roughly in this form until launch of new site in 2010):

I can't exactly remember when I first came across archaeologyfieldwork.com, but I think it was sometime around 2002. as to how I got here, it was likely linking from aboutarchaeology.com. I must say, it's been a FUN ride!

Yikes - I dont go back as far as the "hutchey" version, but I remember all the other formats.  Guess that puts me in the 2001/2002 range.

Like the others here, it's been too long. I think it was somewhere around 2001-02. There was a discussion by some guy that wanted to start a dig and people were jumping all over him exclaiming that he needed this federal permit, and that federal permit. I chimed in with an observation that no permit was likely needed if the guy was digging on private property, had the landowner's permission, and as long as there wasnt a local or state ordinance, etc.

It was also just before Fayroob (the guy with the walking camel avatar) went all jihadi on someone for something....

The scary thing is that I remember those specific message threads. We've probably had 25,000+ messages posted since then in the various incarnations of the website.

Wow, I remember all of these incarnations. I've been following your webpage since probably 1998. Found it when I was first looking into going into archaeology and used it to get my first field job in 2001 :)

I'm much more of a lurker with very limited interaction, but definitely kudos to you for doing such an amazing job.

Don't remember how I found it, but clearly remember the dark background. I lurked for several years before posting.

Good question...I'm thinking it was either a web search, or I saw some reference to it on Shovelbums. I think I actually became a listserv subscriber to Shovelbums within a couple of months of it starting...hmmm. Probably SB.

I think it was in August of 02 thru a link with the US Forest Service Passport in Time web site.  I was a mobilized Army Reservist stationed at USSOCOM at McDill AFB in Tampa Florida working in the public affairs office.  I had a lot of time to cruise the internet an donce I found AFW I was hooked.  I checked it everyday just to keep up with what was going on in archeology.

Richard I too remember the guy with the walking camel who went ballistic and Jennifer had to boot him from the site.  Kept me coming back daily to see what trash he would post next.

Ah, the heady days of AFW.com

It's been a bit more quiet with the transfer to the new format, but there were some "vociferous" discussants (yes, I'm being very kind and generous...) not that long ago.

I miss it too Richard.  I especially liked the post from the women who was going on  a field school to Europe and asked what to take as she couldnt get all her clothes in one bag.  As I recall she got some good advicve about packing light.

Packing is a serious concern, and definitely an art form. I have had tendencies towards over-packing due to perceived needs for redundancies. Now I pack, take it all out, and remove half of what I started with, then put the remainder back in. If there's a need for some item, there will be a shop or thrift store somewhere to buy what I may need. If not, improvise and over come!

Since the implementation of the new format I think we're missing some of the old colorful characters; but that may be due to reasons other than the website changes. I haven't seen Bob around in ages, but then again we haven't had 30 pages of "look at the faces in the rocks" debates either....

lol, was he the guy from texas who would periodically go off and delete his account but then come back or the guy from ohio with the bird rock website?

Bob was actually one the guys who would call out the posters who were so sure they had evidence of 30 kya human agency on natural rocks, or had "evidence" of ancient prehistoric metallurgy and sculpture in clearly historic-period trash deposits found in buried contexts. It was a great show.
