The position is full-time, calendar year, and is limited to 03/10/2013 with extension contingent on funding.
BASIC FUNCTION:
Perform routine and non-routine research work or tests on materials or specimens under minimum supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct, participate in, and, as necessary, lead geophysical survey cruises and ground-truth studies of geophysical survey cruises.
Analyze and interpret geophysical data obtained on cruises.
Analyze laboratory samples obtained on cruises, including the following: 1) benthic biology, 2) trace metal, 3) grain size, 4) water, and 5) sediment core samples.
Handle and maintain highly technical instruments required for performance of cruises, including the following: 1) Interferometric sonars, 2) POS-MV and other motion navigation systems, 3) CHIRP Sub-bottom Sonar, 4) BubblePulse Sub-bottom Sonar, 5) Sediment Profile Imagery cameras, and 6) Underwater Video camera.
Act as liaison to Native American tribal organizations with regard to grant-related archeological projects. Organize and attend related meetings and workshops, and handle the day-to-day communications with the various tribal organizations.
Act as research assistant on a 42' research vessel.
Handle and maintain highly technical instruments required for performance of experiments, including the following: 1) grain-size analyzer, 2) core-logger, and 3) microscopes.
Participate in archeology studies.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform non-routine research work.
Perform other duties as required.
LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Personal computers and printers; Scuba certification; word processing software; ARC-GIS, OIC GeoDAS, and Cleansweep geophysical dataprocessing software; Hypack survey planning software; Chesapeake data processing software; PRIMER software.
ALL REQUIREMENTS ARE SUBJECT TO POSSIBLE MODIFICATION TO REASONABLY ACCOMMODATE INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES.

1) Master's degree in oceanography, or bachelor's degree with a major in geology, geophysics or oceanography plus 4 years of experience in oceanography which includes experience in geophysical surveys and geological sample collection at sea.
The following are also required:
2) Demonstrated experience working with government agencies and environmental managers;
3) Demonstrated experience with handling samples such as 1) benthic biology, 2) trace metal, 3) grain size, 4) water, and 5) sediment core samples;
4) Demonstrated experience with handling and maintaining highly technical instruments required for performance of experiments, including grain-size analyzer, core-logger, and microscopes;
