JOB DESCRIPTION:
This is a temporary position and supported by the Mellon Fund.

An internship at Colonial Williamsburg is a full-time, prearranged learning experience for students interested in a career in a decorative arts, fine arts, or history museum or historic site. Mellon Foundation interns be will assigned to work in one of Colonial Williamsburg’s curatorial disciplines—furniture, prints and maps, paintings and drawings, ceramics and glass, metals, mechanical arts, numismatics, musical instruments, toys, textiles and costumes, archaeological artifacts, zooarchaeological materials and architectural artifacts—within the broader fields of fine art, decorative art, folk art, architectural collections or archaeological collections. While we will attempt to match successful applicants with their areas of interest, placements will vary depending on the ongoing and special projects needs of individual curators. If you are seeking academic credit for your internship, you must make arrangements in advance with your school and your internship advisor.
 
Assists with the research, management, interpretation and preservation of Colonial Williamsburg's fine art, decorative arts, archaeological, architectural, and/or folk art collections while gaining professional experience with hands-on training.

Learns methods of proper documentation of objects in the collection to include developing appropriate data for the creation of full catalog records in The Museums System (TMS) database, as well as paper files.

Assists curator with research, object selection, exhibition planning and rotation in the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum (DWM), Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum (AARFAM), and furnishings installations in the Historic Area.

Gains and enhances knowledge of proper storage techniques of selected fine art, decorative arts, archaeological, architectural, and/or folk art collections.

Plans for and assists with the movement of antique items throughout the Foundation to ensure proper storage, study, and cataloguing.

Interacts with Conservation Department staff to ensure proper care of artifacts within assigned specialty to learn basic conservation principles.

Provides object information in response to inquiries from the public and Colonial Williamsburg staff.

Assists with routine research requests, file maintenance, and Historic Area needs and requests.

Enhances knowledge in specific areas of curatorial responsibility, as well as general Anglo-American history and material culture through reading, research, and participation in bi-weekly accessions meetings with Colonial Williamsburg staff.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program and have completed at least two years of academic credit or currently enrolled in a graduate program.

Proven course work in art history, museum studies, decorative arts, history or closely related field.

Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

Strong organization and interpersonal skills.

Highly desirable:  Strong desire to pursue museum career; experience working with a similar museum collection and with curatorial cataloguing systems; understanding of genealogical research databases; and, familiarity with foreign languages.
