The Archaeological Movie
sanisera
The Cape of Cavalleria Ecomuseum in Menorca, Spain, has scheduled for 2012,
the excavation of three sites. The first is The Roman Necropolis Dig, which
involves the excavation of a cluster of roman tombs belonging to a cemetery
located on the outskirts of the roman city of Sanisera, which was occupied from
123 BC to 550 AD. The second is the excavation of the Roman City of Sanisera,
overlooking the natural port of Sanitja, which presents the same chronology as
the above mentioned necropolis. The third archaeological project is The
Prehistoric Cave Dig, which is focused on the excavation of funerary deposits
made by the first inhabitants of Menorca. The dig takes place in a cave known
as “Cueva de la Costa Norte”, very close to the Cape of Cavalleria Ecomuseum.
It is a collective burial site which dates between 2000 and 1350 B.C. It
involves the collection of burnt bone samples, pottery vessels, bronze and bone
pendants and beads, among other artifacts.
This course consists of two main parts. The first one deals with filming a
video documentary so that the audience can get to know more about the
archaeological findings, the history of the three sites and the archaeological
work carried out both on site and in the laboratory. In the second part of the
course students who participate in this course will learn about the process of
creating a documentary: video footage, preparing the plot, selection of scenes,
sound and the different elements regarding audiovisuals.
The directors of this program are Macià Florit, an expert in the production
of cultural, artistic and fiction videos, and Fernando Contreras, director of
the Ecomuseum of the Cape of Cavalleria. Also, other archaeologists and
specialists in physical anthropology and conservation will collaborate during
the course.
The course runs 7 hours per day, with time dedicated to both video footage
while the archaeologists are excavating, and the processing of the digital
documentation in order to create the archaeoplogical movie.
Participants will also be given lectures on methodology regarding
multimedia productions. Participants will visit archaeological sites on the
island through organized excursions. Courses are given in both English and
Spanish. For every seven course days there are two days off.
