Agency Information: This is administrative work in which the incumbent serves as site director of the Eudora Welty House. The Eudora Welty House is one of the most intact literary house museums in the nation. The property includes the author's 1925 Tudor Revival home with historic gardens and an Education and Visitors Center. Work involves formulating, directing, and controlling the operations of the museum through subordinate personnel and conferences with branch managers and other administration personnel. Incumbent will oversee maintenance, preservation, and conservation of the site's buildings, grounds, and collection by working with agency professionals, and with architects, exhibits designers, scholars, and advisory team members from other agencies and institutions. Incumbent will be responsible for security of persons and property, administering day-to-day operations, and maintaining national level museum professional standards. Additional responsibilities include preparing and managing site budget, developing strategic plans, developing and producing wide variety of programming for school groups and general public, supervising three (3) museum staff members and various contractual workers, managing volunteer program, and serving as public relations representative for the museum. The Museum is open to the public Tuesday–Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Office hours are Monday – Friday from 8:00 am.-5:00 p.m. Work is subject to infrequent review, through conference and reports, by Museum Division Director. Site director will be on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to insure proper protection of this National Historic Landmark.

This is highly professional and technical work with responsibilities for planning and directing specific programs. The work is highly complex and specialized with a leadership performance level of historic resources administration in an assigned specialty area (archaeological, archival cataloging and preservation, reference and patron services, records management, historic preservation, historical education and interpretation and collections management). Incumbents perform specialized work that involves a highly complex historic resource work in a assigned specialty programmatic area and provides historic resources education, planning, and policy recommendations; trains and monitors the work of volunteers and lower level staff; and performs related work as required. Incumbents work independently under the general supervision of a director.
Examples of Work:
Examples of work performed in this classification include, but are not limited to , the following:
Writes professional reports documenting archaeological, historical, or architectural investigations.
Determines office resource requirements and assists in the preparation of budgets for carrying out assigned mission.
Applies specialized professional knowledge skills, and experience to coordinate programmatic functions.
Attends meetings with federal agencies, state agencies, involving the historical resources of the state which may be mitigated and/or impacted.
Composes articulate, accurate and properly documented statements of historical significance and architectural descriptions for historic buildings, structures, and districts based on historical research.
Evaluates accessions, organizes and describes historical resources regardless of media, including, but not limited to paper, film, magnetic, photographic, or artifacts.
Plans and implements historical projects.
Analyzes, inspects, and verifies conformity with approved restoration plans and techniques at each stage of project completion.
Documents historic resources using a variety of media (photography, audio tape, mapping, etc.).
Designs and implements public information and educational programs.
Participates in public hearings involving archaeological sites and preservation issues.
Coordinates, recruits, trains, and schedules volunteers and/or staff.
Researches public requests and disseminates to the public, through direct contact or through reports, articles, and other written materials, information of historical significance.
Originates, researches, plans, produces, and presents public and educational programs with accompanying material.
Lectures on subjects of historical, archaeological, architectural, and/or archival interest.
Conducts historical research to identify and authenticate historical resources and studies and preserves artifacts, objects, manuscripts and records related to the State's cultural and political history.
Negotiates with state, county, and municipal agencies in the planning and scheduling of the disposition of their archival records.
Manages, maintains, and preserves collections.
Serves on interpretive services team and acts as an advocate for the mission of the Department.
Performs reference services and technical assistance for the public and for requesting agencies.
Directs the preservation and maintenance of Mississippi historical sites, collections, and resources.
Counsels periodically with program director and other members of senior management in the promulgation and implementation of policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications:
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
A Master's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
AND
Experience:
Three (3) years of related experience.
OR
Education:
A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four year college or university.
AND
Experience:
Four (4) years of related experience.
