I have more questions again

amandalauren

hello everyone. If you haven't seen my recent post, I. Amanda I live in California and am 14 I have some more questions regarding archeology. When I think about what specific career I want in archeology, I'm really going for Egyptology. But I have some concerns. I don't know what collages have Egyptology classes available. Also, I don't know the demand for them. Does anyone know an Egyptology website to help me out? Thanks everyone.

Hi Amanda! You still have lots of time to decide on colleges and whether you really want to specialize in Egyptology.  Egyptology is a fascinating field, but since it is so attractive, the competition to work in it is probably the fiercest of all. Thus, you will likely need a minimum of a PhD, and then realistically, post-graduate work, too. The schools that focus on Egyptology are thus in high demand, and entrance is very competitive. You will need very high grades and SAT scores, just to get in at the undergraduate level. Not at all impossible, but if you are indeed serious, you need to start working towards that high GPA now. The same will apply to graduate school admission, so you have your work cut out for you, for the next 10 or 12 years.

On the other hand, you might want to explore the possibility of becoming an expert in archaeology that is a bit closer to home. The Southwest, including SoCal, has some of the most fascinating archaeology in the world, and there are many aspects of it that are not well understood, and thus make exciting discoveries and breakthroughs real possibilities. In addition, lots of California schools have excellent archaeology programs, e.g., UCLA, Sonoma State, San Diego State. There is also the Society for California Archaeology (http://scahome.org/) that you can join - their conferences are great (Mar 29 - Apr 1, in San Diego this year), and you would meet lots of students, amateurs, and professionals who would be of great help in mapping out a plan for you.

Check out the Crow Canyon archaeology program (google it).  They have a program for people your age.
