Archaeology Intern at Work

Title:  Archaeological Collections Management Intern
Department:  Archaeology
Supervisor:  Head of Archeology
Hours:  Ranges from 4-12 hours a week. Hours are flexible dependent on number of hours needed for academic credit.  Archeology offices are located at Fort Snelling Historic Site in Saint Paul, MN.
Timeframe:  Summer 2012 (June - August)

Status:  Unpaid, a limited number of paid internship funding is available to students from minority groups who are underrepresented in the Society

Project Summary: Archaeology interns will assist in managing archaeological collections currently stored in the Department’s facility at Fort Snelling Visitor’s Center.  Tasks will include inventory, organization, re-housing and some detailed analysis of portions of the collections.

Student Qualifications:  Undergraduate junior, senior, or graduate students.  Must have completed completed at least a field school course and a lab methods course.

Ideal degrees:   Anthropology or Archaeology

Student Responsibilities: Students will be responsible for establishing a schedule that will allow them to complete the number of hours required for the credits they will receive, and adhering to the schedule.  They will be responsible for conducting their work  according to the instruction provided by the internship supervisor and reporting any problems they encounter.

For most interns, their final product will be an accurate, detailed inventory of one or more archaeological collections.  In some cases, these may include some analysis of the collection or one or more sub-assemblages within it.

Knowledge intern is expected to gain:

The internship will provide opportunities for interns to gain an understanding of the principles and practice of archaeology, especially with regard to curation and conservation of  archaeological materials. Knowledge is gained via time spent inventorying existing artifact collections, identifying conservation issues and arranging for appropriate treatment, synthesizing catalog data and preparing summary reports on collections. Training in MHS collections procedures will be provided on-site.
