Paid Internships
The Kansas Historical Society offers paid internship positions during the summer. The deadline for each of these is April 15.
The John Ripley Internship is a full-time position (40 hours per week) for eight weeks offered during the summer. Interns will receive a $2,500 stipend.
The Lela Barnes and Marjorie L. Crump Internship is for graduate students enrolled in Kansas colleges and universities and Kansas residents attending any graduate school. In 2012, the last year for this internship, the position is eight weeks of full-time work (320 hours) and a stipend of $2,500.
The Marylouise Meder Internship is a full-time position (40 hours per week) for eight weeks offered during the summer in odd years. Interns will receive a $2,500 stipend.
Non-Paid Internship Opportunities
All other internship opportunities at the Historical Society would be non-paid, coordinated with students seeking college credit and on an as needed basis. If the Historical Society has particular needs for summer internships, those needs will be posted here by March 1 each year. Internships could be coordinated in the following work areas.
Kansas Museum of History/Historic Sites
The Museum’s large collection of artifacts are associated with the history of Kansas and the Great Plains and include art, textiles, household items, political and military artifacts, and industrial tools and equipment. The Museum Division also administers the 16 Historic Sites around the state.
Students, preferably in graduate school, interested in non-paid internship opportunities in this area should submit the internship application below by April 15.
Education
The Education division develops classroom materials on Kansas history; administers traveling resource trunks; and oversees programs at the Kansas Museum of History, Stach School, museum tours, and the hands-on Discovery Place.

State Archives
The State Archives’ vast collections include library materials state and local records, manuscripts, photographs, audio-visual materials, electronic records, and maps. The State Archives administers the research room in Topeka, open to the public, and Kansas Memory, the online digital archives, kansasmemory.org.
Students interested in non-paid internship opportunities in this area should submit the internship application below by April 15.
Cultural Resources
The Cultural Resources Division combines the offices of archeology and historic preservation. The archeology office curates prehistoric and historic archeological specimens from donations, for other state and federal agencies, and materials recovered from the Historical Society’s sponsored archeological research projects. The Historic Preservation Office administers the National Register in Kansas, Heritage Trust Fund grants, survey and planning, Certified Local Government, and review and compliance.

Public Information Office
The public information office is responsible for promoting all of the Historical Society’s programs, which includes public relations, magazine article writing, news releases, website updates, and visitor analysis.
