Archaeological Internship
This position will be located in Skagway, Alaska. Skagway is a tourist destination that over 900,000 people visit each summer. Originally a town constructed to provide services to potential miners rushing for gold into the Klondike area, it still serves as a destination to experience this unique moment in history, as well as providing ample outdoor opportunities and tourist activities.
Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park will conduct Emergency Data Recovery of the Kinneyville Archaeological Site. This site is being heavily impacted by changes in the course of a river. The purpose of this survey is to collect archaeological data to identify archaeological and cultural resources present within the site boundaries and to provide recommendations regarding future protection or mitigation of the site. This internship will involve conducting an archeological survey of this site, digging shovel tests and archeological excavations, laboratory processing and analysis of recovered artifacts, and preparing detailed field notes and records, daily logs and journals, photographs and photo logs, archeological forms, and feature and artifact drawings. In addition, the intern will use GPS, GIS and other computer software in support of data collection and reporting activities. Some of the time may be spent in the backcountry. The intern may be required to live outdoors in a tent, hike in a backcountry setting without trails or modern amenities, and may transport in helicopters, fixed wing aircraft and motorized and non-motorized watercraft, as part of park activities.
