Yesterday I had the opportunity to volunteer on an archaeology study coordinated by archaeologist Bill Sandy and the Vernon Township Historical Society. Here are a few photos:

Historical marker. There is an interesting history behind this site and the struggle that went on to preserve it from development.

Bill Sandy gives a tour of the site

Local 7th graders had a chance to come out and learn about archaeology. They were screening dirt that the twp had disturbed by backhoe.

A few local archaeologists as well as members of the historical society and staff from the school helped with the effort. And hmm.. I think it's finally time for me to retire my battered field baseball cap. Looking a little bit rough. ;>

More info on the Black Creek site and the Vernon Township Historical Society can be found here.

Neat, what was the geologist doing? I'd say you got your money's worth from the hat.

Apparently there was some prior geology or geomorph work done there with trenching. I heard a little bit about it but honestly don't know all the details. If I find some time I'd like to look up some of the reports, as this was a really interesting site.

Here is a story on the site from the Archaeology Channel: http://www.archaeologychannel.org/blackckint.html

and local newspaper coverage of the project: http://strausnews.mycapture.com/mycapture/folder.asp?event=1468235&CategoryID=1521&view=1
