Opportunity Description:
Casa Grande Ruins National Monument is looking for ONE motivated, enthusiastic couple who enjoy the outdoors, interacting with visitors, sharing knowledge with others, helping to protect 700 year old dwellings, and interpreting the Hohokam culture and the diverse and rich Sonoran desert environment. As volunteers at Casa Grande you will:
*Work the visitor center to greet visitors, collect entrance fees, sell educational materials, answer the telephone and take reservations for special group tours, and provide information and orientation to visitors.
* Rove park grounds providing information and informally talk with visitors on-site at the ruins where you will interpret the archeology, flora, and fauna of the Monument. Also, provide site protection and educate visitors on proper site etiquette.
*present guided tours of 45 minutes length over flat terrain
*develop and present 20 minute demonstrations on topics of your choice. Examples might include flint knapping, basket weaving, pottery making, birding, edible plants, to name a few.
*work with small groups of 4th grade students doing a game or craft
The Monument is located in the town of Coolidge, Arizona, in the middle of the state. Groceries, restaurants, and limited shopping are available in Coolidge, or more variety is found in the larger city of Casa Grande only 20 miles further. Volunteer housing is in the form of RV sites, creating a small 6 trailer community within the park grounds. The housing includes use of a washer and dryer in adjacent small utility building. Water, sewage, electric, and propane is supplied to the RV site. Volunteers must work at least 32 hours each week to qualify for a RV site.
Volunteers are needed for a minimum of 3 months. Volunteers available for more than 3 months will rate higher on our selection rating panel.
Decisions for volunteers beginning service in September or October will be made in mid June. Decisions for volunteers only available in or after December will not be made until the end of August.
Please feature your public speaking experience.
Volunteer coodinator prefers contact via email. Arrange telephone calls in advance as staffing is limited and it is often difficult to connect with rangers via telephone due to duties elsewhere within the park.
