Yosemite National Park: Archeology Volunteers Wanted for Facelift, 2012

Yosemite Facelift, September 25-30th, 2012

Yosemite National Park’s biggest volunteer event is the Yosemite Facelift, scheduled for September 25-30th, 2012. This event is sponsored largely by Yosemite Climbers Association, but is attended by a wide range of volunteers.
This week-long event is focused on an intensive clean-up of litter and trash accumulated over the summer season, and typically attracts around 1,000 volunteers!

The Yosemite Archeology Office has become involved over the years in order to limit damage to archeological sites during the event. In a National Park with such an abundance of Cultural Resources, a great deal of time must be spent prior to, and during the event, educating volunteers on how to distinguish historical artifacts from modern day trash, and how to treat any other types of archeological materials encountered. The Yosemite Archeology Office will be planning a variety of educational programs, and may also need post-event laboratory help identifying and cataloging historic artifacts that were mistaken for modern trash. Not only is this a fun event, but it is also a great way to learn about Historic Archeology in Yosemite!

Archeological volunteers will range from Undergraduate and Graduate students, to Cultural Resource Management professionals. Possible internship credits and camping opportunities may be arranged.

If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please contact the Facelift Archeology Coordinator, Shelley Szeghi at Shelley_Szeghi@nps.gov or 209-379-1431.
