Pre-Clovis Artifacts

This guestion is directed more towards charlie. I was just wondering under what criteria you place items to be pre-clovis. Is it the strata they are found in? Are clovis above them when you find them? I know this might sound stupid but i just want to know. Never been taught much on pre-clovis, just that its out there. All I have heard about the type, if it is officially catagorized, is that the people who have found them discovered them in strata below what clovis was being found at. Im not trying to sound rude because Im not doubting they aren't pre-clovis.

Hey Bro.
Yeah, that's the basic concept: Artifacts found under a well-defined Clovis stratum, that exhibit a technology different from Clovis. The site I'm researching has a well-defined Clovis stratum: Where the soil comes in contact with the Pleistocene gravel strata. The gravel strata has been thoroughly dated to preClovis times, and contains artifacts that are barely preClovis to probably way preClovis. Berkeley and USGS are working on dating the artifacts directly, to get a more specific idea of different dates of artifacts contained within the gravel:
