PROJECT TITLE: North American Archaeology from the Southeast and Great Plains

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project focuses on historical research into NMNH's Anthropology collections to better document the objects and facilitate future research, including correlating field book notes to artifacts and performing cataloguing activities. The focal collection is related to North American archaeology, especially collections from the Southeast and Great Plains. Other short term projects pertaining to collections management may also be included depending on the background, experience, and interest of the student. The intern will work directly the archaeological collections located at the Museum Support Center (MSC) in Suitland, Maryland (a free shuttle service is provided from the National Museum of Natural History).

QUALIFICATIONS: Accuracy and attention to detail is required. Anthropology or History background with interest in Native Americans would be helpful. Familiar with use of database, spreadsheet, and word processing software. Willing to work independently. Preference will be given to individuals pursuing a career in Museum Studies, Archaeology, or Anthropology with a basic knowledge of collections management, and a demonstrated ability to perform historical research. Applicants should be physically fit as this project requires some heavy lifting and the ability to climb ladders. This internship is intended for graduate and undergraduate students interested in exploring a career in museum collections management and/or anthropology. Participants must commit to a minimum of 16 hours per week, during regular work hours, standard work days. Internship must be completed during the Fall Semester 2012. Schedule can be arranged based on the requirements of the student's school to obtain credit for the internship. Participants are expected to be in-residence at the Smithsonian's Museum Support Center (MSC) in Suitland, Maryland during their participation in the internship.
