sanisera

The course runs 7 hours per day, with time dedicated to both excavation and laboratory work. Courses are given in both English and Spanish.

The field school has a duration of 20 days and will start in Spain. Students will meet in Menorca during the first day. Next and during the following 7 days they will focus on the excavation of both urban structures and tombs from the Roman city of Sanisera.

The excavation of the Roman City focuses on the urban structures of Sanisera. During this part of the excavation, participants will receive an intensive introduction to basic aspects of field excavation techniques following the Harris Matrix.

The excavation of the Necropolis focuses on funerary structures, specifically inhumations. Participants will learn and apply excavation techniques used in physical anthropology when excavating tombs.

Then students will travel for 2 days around mainland Spain on their way to Oporto (Portugal). Several stops will be scheduled in interesting cities and archaeological sites such as Barcelona, Segovia and Salamanca.

Once in Oporto, they will be taken to the centre of the Archaeological Institute of the Atlantic Sea. They will spend 6 days studying the material from the excavations at Talabriga.  It consists of a unique collection of Roman pottery and human remains that will be analyzed by the students so that they get experience on archaeological laboratory work. In the laboratory participants will be instructed by an anthropologist and other specialists in the classification, study, and conservation of human remains and other related materials. Participants will also be given lectures on methodology, Roman archaeology, physical anthropology and classification of archaeological materials. They will also visit the archaeological site of Conimbriga.

After this stay in Portugal, students will go back to Menorca in order to finish the course. In their way back, they will visit the historical city of Granada and its famous Muslim palatial complex of La Alhambra.

Last days of the course will be off for the students to enjoy and get to know the island of Menorca.
