Jennifer Palmer

Event Name: The Community Archaeology Program

When: July 15-19, 2013 from 9am—4pm

Where: On the Binghamton University campus, with field work at a local archaeological site.

Description: The Community Archaeology Program (CAP) at Binghamton University provides a professionally supervised opportunity for non-archaeologists to participate in excavations at a nationally important site. Each summer, sessions are held for community members 10 years of age and older. No prior experience is necessary!

In return for their hard work and enthusiasm, participants gain a greater appreciation for the history and prehistory of the region, as well as the practice of archaeology and historic preservation.

CAP begins with lectures on archaeological methods and New York State prehistory and history. Participants have the opportunity to tour archaeology laboratories and research facilities, participating in lab work themselves. In the field, participants learn proper excavation and recording techniques and how to identify artifacts. The program is open to anyone ages 10 and older.

Who: Children ages 10-12, Teens ages 13-17, and Adults 18+.

Cost: $169 for kids, $175 for teens and adults.
