Petition to Save German Cultural Heritage Funding

Hello
This is a question from Germany but hopefully still of interest to you. North-Rhine Westphalia's unique cultural heritage is under threat: massive cutbacks in the public funding of cultural heritage have been announced: Zero Euro funding from 2015 on!

Some of the most important sites in Germany are located here: Neanderthal, the type-locality of Neanderthal Man, the well-preserved Roman town of Xanten, the the cathedrals of Aachen and Cologne, both UNESCO world heritage sites, to name just a few. Here is the unique zone where "keltoi" and Germanic tribes met.

The stop of state funding would mean a collapse for freelance archaeologists and specialists of all kinds. It would mean a collapse of job opportunities for the young. If a wealthy state like North-Rhine Westphalia starts with such a political strategy certainly other German states and foreign countries that are less economically wealthy will follow.

The German Society for Pre- and Protohistory has started an online-petition, with which we want to urge the government to rethink their plans. In Germany the petition has become an overwhelming success with more than 22.000 signees and surprisingly wide resonance in the press since end of March. We now hope to bring the protest to an international level, for which we need your support. May I ask to spread the word by putting the information on your timeline and asking for signature and sharing? It would really make a difference!

Thank you very much!
Diane Scherzler
