The intern will work with BLM GIS data for the Iditarod National Historic Trail, and one-of-a-kind historic data of national significance housed by BLM’s Iditarod National Historic Trail (NHT) program.  Primary responsibilities include use BLM Alaska ArcMap GIS program and Iditarod NHT trail data to build and populate a geodatabase from the existing Comprehensive Management Plan for the Trail, and use data scanning and cataloging hardware and software to digitize, inventory, and compile historic maps, photographs, field notes, etc. to an existing historic collection (see http://www.arlis.org/resources/special-collections/inhc-collection/  to view the collection).  Data will then be physically organized for storage in archival binders, boxes, etc. and transferred to the final archival repository.  Other tasks may include maintenance and upgrading of the agencies national historic trail website, production of graphic products for public outreach efforts, and limited field work at BLM Anchorage Field Office Campbell Tract Facility in support of public events such as the Ceremonial Start of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, Outdoor Week, etc.

    Objectives
    1. build and populate a geodatabase, from existing Comprehensive Management Plan (CMP) for the Trail
    2. correct mapping errors for Trail geodatabase
    3. digitize, inventory, and compile historic maps, photographs, field notes, etc. to an existing historic collection, and physically transfer collection to archival facility
    4. provide support, help staff BLM Anchorage Field Office public events, and other initiatives as needed
    Unmet Needs This Position Addresses
    Enable an update to the Comprehensive Management Plan for the Trail by making previous management recommendations accessible in a GIS format. Preservation via digitization of one of a kind historic data related to the Iditarod NHT. Support for public understanding, education and stewardship for the Iditarod NHT by making historic resources related to the trail easily available to the public and other researchers, media producers, etc.
    Training Provided
    Informal hands-on training and mentorship with BLM resource experts for the Iditarod NHT, and GIS specialists at work site. Field work safety training provided by BLM as available/necessary.
    Educational/Recreational Opportunities
    Extensive northern/winter recreation opportunities in Anchorage, AK including XC skiing and a diversity of winter wildland recreation. Also extensive popular culture and fine arts events as Anchorage is the largest city in AK, and home to 2 universities
