Description

This internship involves working with the professional archeology staff at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, performing Phase I shovel test excavations as part of a pedestrian survey in an agricultural field. Other tasks may include research, processing artifacts in the lab and creating temporary exhibits for weekend events at the Park.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Basic knowledge of the methods and techniques of archeology; capable of working well with a team as well as independently with minimal guidance at times; possess good communication skills, both oral and written; must be able to perform work in an outdoor setting, using a variety of hand tools standard to archeology; must be able to walk over rough terrain and preform frequent bending, stooping, kneeling and lifting, shoveling, screening and the like for fieldwork; ability to sit for long periods of time and perform basic word processing skills for lab work; ability to work in extreme heat and humidity in environments where snakes, biting insects, and poison ivy are present. Knowledge of Adobe Suites, Microsoft Powerpoint, Microsoft Excel; ability to work independently and prior archeology field and/or lab experience is preferred.

Duties: Perform basic supervised research; sift soil for artifact retrieval; perform basic field excavations; including, but not limited to digging, mapping, photographing and preparing written descriptions; keep daily written record of work performed; sorting, washing, labeling and bagging artifacts; perform data entry; general maintenance of the lab Stipend: A $100 per 40 hour week stipend; A total of $1,200 for a full 12 week internship will be provided.

Housing: Park Housing in lower town Harpers Ferry is available for the duration of the internship.
