Archaeological digs in the GREEK EMPORIUM and TEMPLE near Krastevich

This course is devoted to the Greek civilization and the material culture left by the ancient Greeks in course of their colonization of the Balkan Peninsula. The emphasis of the program is the field practice at two archaeological sites - a cult place (Temple) and a commercial settlement (Emporium) located in proximity to each other. This ancient architectural complex will make students familiar with the Greek period (5.- 4. c. BC) and will approve their skills on field archaeology and field practice.

The course is structured into three modules:

  1. Field practice (archaeological digs);
  2. Seminars and practice with materials found;
  3. Educational trips.

In course of the excavations the participants will learn the basic methods in field archaeology: Setting out a Grid-plane; Levelling; Planning and recording of archaeological features; Architectural survey; Artifact identification; Archaeological photography. The second module is focused on post-field work and offers practice in artifact's recording: Taking professional photos, Inventory, Work with mass material, Cataloging and describing the small finds. Special attention is given to the processing of pottery found in course of the excavations. The students will learn how to proceed with pottery shards, how to draw a scientific illustration and how to work with special software at the computer.

In addition the students will spend two days for exploring the cultural monuments and museum exposition in the area.
