2014 Archaeological Field School on Rebun Island, Japan

Project Description: Under the direction of Dr. Andrzej Weber, the Department of Anthropology, University of Alberta, will be offering a 6-credit Archaeological Field School (ANTHR 396) on Rebun Island, Japan. This field school will be hosted by the Baikal-Hokkaido Archaeology Project (BHAP), which is an international collaborative research initiative exploring hunter-gatherer lifeways in Northeast Asia. Location & Site Description: The Hamanaka 2 site is a multi-component shell midden in Funadomari Bay on Rebun Island, northern Japan. A wide array of materials have been recovered from the site including ceramic, lithic, metal, and faunal and human remains, ranging in age from the Late Jomon through Okhotsk periods (~1500BC - AD1000).
