Location: Pomar de Valdivia, Palencia, SPAIN

Season Dates: August 2nd, 2014 - August 31, 2014

Project Directors: Martín Almagro-Gorbea and Jesús Francisco (Kechu) Torres-Martínez, Complutense University of Madrid

THE PROJECT: Monte Bernorio is a fortified city which was inhabited for several centuries during Iron Age. It played an important part in the Cantabrian Wars against Rome.

The archaeological intervention will focus on this site, in which we will both excavate and survey. Surveys and trial pits will be carried out on various other Late Prehistory sites as well. These sites are also included in the “Monte Bernorio in its Environment” Project.

COST: 2600 $ including:

Accomodation at a rural hotel or house, and meals. The students will be accompanied by English-speaking personnel at all times. Each member of the archaeological team speaks Spanish, and English or French. The hotel/house, will be shared with the rest of the archaeological team.

The theoretical and practical training will focus on digging and surveying techniques. We will excavate and document archaeological sites, as well as survey and explore the area, under the supervision of archaeologists from the Prehistory Department of the Complutense University of Madrid and the IMBEAC. At the site, the student will be trained on being trained on:

  • Digging tools and their correct use.
  • Setting up trenches and transects.
  • Digging techniques.
  • Setting up and managing the spoil heaps.
  • Documenting methods (files, drafts, archaeological photography, drawing…).
  • Safety at the site.

Surveying will be held in the surroundings of the archaeological area of Monte Bernorio, as well as the Eastern area of the Palentine Mountains. This practical training will teach the students:

  • Uses of cartography, aerial photographs, compass and GPS.
  • Surveying montainous areas.
  • Equipment and safety.

The training includes Experimental Archaeology practises. In two different workshops the students will receive training on building materials and pottery. These workshops will be held at the Cantabrian Village of Argüeso, a centre of Experimental Archaeology that recreates an Iron Age Village.

Guided visits to Archaeological Museums and Iron Age Archaeological sites of the North of Spain, as well as other activities.

Medical and Accident Insurance for all the students.

Official Certificate of the Course from the IMBEAC and the Prehistory Department of the Complutense University of Madrid.

  3. A CV.

The course takes place from August 2nd until August 31st 2014. The team will leave Madrid August 2nd around 12:00 am. We suggest you book the plane tickets (which we cannot arrange and are not included in the price) to arrive to Madrid the morning of August 2nd 2014. Enrolled students will receive precise instructions about their reception in Madrid and their transport to the site.

To be able to take part in the activities of the course, good general physical conditions are required. We need to be informed about any allergies or diseases, including medication needed if any. Also, it is convenient to have a health insurance (the insurance we provide covers accidents and diseases during the development of the course’s activities and stay at the project’s accommodations, not the trip to Spain or activities carried out during the students’ spare time).
