New! Angeles National Forest Archaeological Survey

CA-4199
June 23-27, 2014

Must commit to entire session

Join us on the Angeles National Forest for another hike into the past in the San Gabriel Mountains of southern California! This region is home to a number of known archaeological sites that have not yet been formally recorded. PIT volunteers and Forest Staff will do "foot recon" to locate, map, and document these sites. The area contains both historic (cabin remains, wagon roads, mining activities) and prehistoric archaeological sites (Native Californian encampments). Daily field work will be outdoors in locations with no facilities. The work we complete will allow us to gain a better understanding of past land-use systems in a little known part of California. This investigation is not only expected to be fun, but also highly interesting, and it's in a spectacularly beautiful area - we hope you'll be a part of our crew this summer!

Special skills: Must be physically capable of hiking up to five miles each day over moderate to rough terrain, and in a variety of weather conditions; previous archaeological survey, site recording, mapping, GPS, and/or photography experience helpful, but not required
