Looking for work AFTER summer
Mandy
I am graduating in August, and I am going to miss the field season. I will be spending a year in the Portland, OR area before going to grad school in the Fall of 2009. I need to find a job during that time. I would like to do field work or anything archaeology/anthropology related, but I'm having trouble finding prospects. Are all the tech jobs in the summer? Any ideas? Thoughts? Help?
Thanks!

I was about to post something similar to this. Where are all the jobs during the winter months?
As my season only lasts 6 months I need to find work for the other 6. Does any one know? Does the Southwest still do surveys during this time? Or are the ones who do know aren't telling? Or is it just simply; gotta keep on looking until you find something... ?

I'm not sure what type of work you are looking for, but contract archaeology fieldwork, at least here in the Southwest, isn't restricted to any particular time of the year. For example, I am currently working on a dig that started this past August and will end this July, uninterrupted. Obviously you can't survey if there is a solid sheet of snow on the ground, but that wouldn't stop an excavation. In the Arizona desert, the only times we don't work is when we get the sporadic monsoon rains or occassional dust storms, and those are in the summer.
I guess it's different in Oregon and Colorado?

Many companies try to plan their big projects for the warmer months, but that's not always possible. I have worked on MANY projects during the coldest part of the winter. When I lived in FL, people on my crew were stunned to hear that we often still dug in the northeast even when the temps were below zero. There may not be as much work out there, but there is still work - you just may have to travel for it, and be more persistent with the job search.
Good luck,
Jennifer

Yea... just applied for work in VA and NJ, both I think were posted here  (Thanks!) So far though no word.

Well, for Colorado, once it snows that's it, season is over, unless there's time left for some drafting of reports. Well, OK, for the Forest Service, anyway. The lovely 1039, 6 months of work, usually up until it snows in the mountains and its there until late spring, when you get to come back. However, it really gets complicated when family is involved and can't really be gone for 6 months maybe more like a month or two. So, that narrows things even further. But it's a love....

Archaeovagrant
I have surveyed year-round in southern NM/west TX. It gets pretty dang cold out there, but it doesn't snow very often, and when it does, it doesn't last long.
