Position Announcement for opening
at the Springfield Field Station, Springfield, IL
 
The Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS), Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, is seeking a Visiting Compliance Archaeologist to be stationed at its Springfield Field Station, Springfield, IL. This position will work in coordination with the Assistant Director, ISAS and the IDOT Cultural Resources staff in the review of Illinois Department of Transportation’s archaeological survey, testing, and excavation project reports to ensure conformity with ISAS, SHPO (State Historic Preservation Officer), and FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) archaeological protocols. This individual will undertake, as necessary, tasks required for the successful implementation and completion of IDOT’s Section 106 and applicable state cultural resource obligations, the preparation of State and Federal Memorandums of Agreement and Programmatic Agreements, and plan and prepare reports of IDOT archaeological compliance activities for professional and regulatory organizations.
 
The successful candidate should have in hand or by the position start date an M.A. in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field and a minimum of three years experience in conducting archaeological field and laboratory investigations in the Eastern Woodlands cultural area. Individual must have a basic familiarity with Eastern Woodlands archaeological culture history, Illinois archaeological culture history and research agendas, and Federal and State of Illinois historic preservation and burial laws and regulations.
 
A valid driver’s license is necessary.  Some duties associated with this position will involve travel across the state and the Midwest.  Candidate should have a basic familiarity with computer word processing, graphic, and database programs. Demonstrated ability to complete projects and reports in a timely and competent manner.
 
This is a one-year full-time Visiting Academic Professional position, however, the position could be made non-visiting in the future.  Salary is negotiable based on experience.  Proposed starting date is as soon as possible after the closing date.
