Architectural History Staff Manager

Dovetail Cultural Resource Group (Dovetail) is currently accepting applications for a manager of our Architectural History program. This full-time, salaried position with excellent benefits is based out of our Fredericksburg, Virginia office.  Over the past 10 years, Dovetail’s architectural/historical research staff has grown to over a dozen individuals including architectural historians, historians, CAD experts, and preservation technicians. The manager is responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the staff and both short- and long-term project planning. Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinating Dovetail’s architectural staff and technical products to assure that project needs are met and all work complies with federal, state, and local historic preservation laws and regulations
  • Provide training to the staff on both technical studies and report production
  • Identify project opportunities and complete written proposals and budgets for small- and large-scale architectural and research projects
  • Help Dovetail’s principals and directors to coordinate architectural history projects with state and federal agencies including authoring project compliance documents
  • Attend meetings with clients and agencies to understand their cultural resource needs and help usher them through the legal process
  • Work with Dovetail’s principals and directors on long-term program goals and staffing needs
  • Support archaeological and GIS staff on their architectural/historical needs
  • Conduct historical studies and architectural field research, compile resource packets, and author reports and other technical products, as needed
  • Working knowledge of CAD and/or GIS required; Direct program experience a plus

 Applicant must have a minimum of: a) a Bachelor’s degree in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, History, or a related field and at least 10 years of hands-on experience dealing with recordation of cultural resources in a professional setting; or, b) a Master’s degree in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, History, or a related field and at least eight year of hands-on experience dealing with recordation of cultural resources in a professional setting. Intimate knowledge of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and Section 4(f) of the Department of Transportation Act is a must.

 The applicant must also have a minimum of five years of experience supervising staff on complex architectural history projects and a superior knowledge of Word, Excel, and report editing procedures. They must be extremely organized, detail oriented, able to multitask, and meeting project deadlines and budget requirements.  The individuals should be physically able to conduct architectural surveys in a myriad of settings including rural areas, as needed, and some travel during the week may be required. Per diem and lodging will be provided on projects more than approximately 60 miles from Fredericksburg.
