JOB SUMMARY:

About the Position:
Serves as the Museum Specialist (Registrar) for the National Museum of Health and Medicine and is responsible for developing and maintaining a comprehensive analytical catalogue and control system of collections for the National Museum of Health and Medicine’s (NMHM) reporting requirements. Position requires extensive working knowledge of NMHM registration and cataloging policies and procedures and legal and policy aspects thereof. Incumbent will maintain an extensive working knowledge and understanding of museum classification and nomenclature systems using quantitative and qualitative techniques for analyzing and measuring the effectiveness and efficiency of the Registrar program. Incumbent is also responsible for sustaining a comprehensive, object type-specific conservation program.

MAJOR DUTIES:
·         Management, maintenance, and preservation of National Museum of Health and Medicine (NMHM) collection records.  Utilizes existing software (KE Software Electronic Museum [KE Emu]) and physical arrangement and security systems to establish and implement all aspects of collections records management, to include that which requires demonstrable experience with protected PII, PHI, and otherwise HIPAA-protected information.
·         Management, maintenance, and preservation of NMHM collections.  Implements and executes all aspects of collections management and conservation, to include work which requires demonstrable experience with legal and ethical consideration related to human remains and compliance with related federal laws.
·         Acquisition, disposition, availability and accountability of collections and records.  Accountable   for all collections and related items at all times, to include any movement, loan management, couriering, and management assessments for pest management and risk mitigation.
·         Museum collections management policy development and implementation.  Oversees and chairs collections committees, working with existing collections management software (KE Emu), developing registration policies and procedure, planning for and familiarity with responding to multiple-agency official federal and other inquiries in accordance with federal law.
·         Lead preservation officer for NMHM collections.
