The Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS), Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, is seeking a Visiting Ceramic Analyst to be located in Champaign, Illinois. This position will conduct analyses of prehistoric ceramic assemblages from archaeological sites, including all aspects of the identification, analysis, archaeological interpretation, report preparation, and curation of said assemblages.
The candidate will perform the identification and recordation of prehistoric ceramic assemblages from archaeological sites, including the quantification of results and preparation of appropriate tables, analyses and interpretation of the archaeological significance of the materials, as well as supervise, train and mentor technical and hourly staff in these tasks. Maintain handwritten and electronic databases of ceramic analyses and inventories. Manage and monitor ceramic materials under analysis, and ensure they are promptly and properly prepared for curation following analysis. Serve as a consultant to coworkers in projects requiring the identification and interpretation of prehistoric ceramic materials. Maintain communication with colleagues in the region and keep abreast of relevant research and developments in the field of Illinois archaeology and prehistoric ceramic technologies. Perform other basic material analyses of archaeological assemblages, interpret results and prepare basic archaeological reports.
The successful candidate should have a B.A. (M.A. preferred) in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field. A minimum of two years experience in conducting ceramic investigations at prehistoric sites in the Eastern Woodlands cultural area. Demonstrated ability to design and complete ceramic analyses and reports in a timely and competent manner. Basic familiarity with Eastern Woodlands and Illinois prehistoric cultures, with an emphasis on pottery use, styles, and manufacture; and ceramic analytical procedures, e.g., creating rim profiles, recognizing tempering agents and vessel forms, determining manufacturing methods, regional ceramic typologies, and ceramic statistical measures.
Candidate should have a basic familiarity with computer word processing, graphic, and database programs.
This is a one-year full-time Visiting Academic Professional position, however, the position could be made permanent in the future. Salary is negotiable based on experience. Proposed starting date is as soon as possible after the closing date.
