*Position limited to college students currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college or university and pursuing a degree in Archaeology, Anthropology or closely related field. * This is a part-time position.
 
* *Must work a minimum of 10 hours per week. May work up to 40 hours per week and up to 1500 hours per year.
 
State Historic Preservation Office Intern-Archaeology

The Arizona State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), a division of Arizona State Parks, assists private citizens, private institutions, local governments, tribes, and state and federal agencies in the identification, evaluation, protection, and enhancement of historic and archaeological properties that have significance for local communities, the State of Arizona, or the Nation. The role and function of the SHPO is defined in both state law (Arizona Historic Preservation Act) and federal law (National Historic Preservation Act, as amended).
 
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES The intern's primary responsibility will be to assist with records management. The incumbent will enter records information into the SHPO compliance database, primarily by typing and scanning, and preparing documents for permanent storage. The incumbent will also enter archaeological site and project information into the AZSITE cultural resources database. Additional duties will include assisting with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)-based projects, assisting with error-correction in the SHPO database, and updating the SHPO library to improve usefulness of this resource for SHPO staff and the public.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Computer competence in PC and/or Mac platforms. Completion of college-level courses in Anthropology and Archaeology. Working knowledge and skill with GIS. Working knowledge of databases. Skill in basic researching and clerical skills. Skill in oral and written communication. Accurate typing-30 wpm minimum. Legible handwriting. General knowledge of the history and prehistory of Arizona and a basic knowledge of the geographical and environmental areas within the state. Ability to multitask and establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to accurately complete repetitive typing tasks. Creative thinking to solve unique problems. Self-motivated and self-directed.
 
Selective Preferences Basic knowledge of state and federal historic preservation legislation and the National Register of Historic Places desirable but not necessary.
