Pathways Student Internship Eligibles enrolled or accepted for enrollment and eligible veteran preference eligible with student status. Qualified students who are eligible for the Pathways Internship program must be enrolled in an accredited college including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges; professional, technical, vocational, and trade school, advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.
This is an excepted service appointment under the Pathway's Internship Program. The Intern appointment is an indefinite period to complete the educational requirement and may be eligible for consideration for conversion to a permanent or term appointment at the agency’s discretion without further competition upon satisfactory completion of the program requirements.
Eligibility Requirements: In order to be eligible for an appointment under the Pathways Internship Program:
You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the institution (certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum); and
Enrollment with a qualifying educational institution such as a state-approved home school; or accredited technical or vocational school; a 2 or 4 year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum; and
Students must be in good academic standing according to their institution with a GPA of at least 2.0.
You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program.
Position Information: This position is established to provide meaningful employment opportunity at the Graduate Student Level; the incumbent serves as a Student Trainee (Archeology Technician) SCUBA Diver with the Submerged Resources Center (SRC), National Park Service (NPS) Intermountain Region, Lakewood, Colorado.

Must be certified scuba diver able to meet training, diving certifications.

Must be able to pass agency Diving Examination (Blue Card)

The incumbent will assist the Project Director in conducting archeological survey and documentation of submerged cultural resources. The employment opportunity may involve: specific administrative task/work assignments and a variety of activities and assignments, and working with technical and professional staff in support of office programs and activities to gain practical work experience.
Work in parks and assist in the identification of archeological sites to be recorded by the field crew, methods to be used, and final product presentation appropriate to final publication or application as specified by the Project Director.
Under the general guidance of a Principal Investigator, Project Director or other supervisory Archeologist direct archeological survey or excavation crews and provide general assistance to crew members in recordation other site features or artifact types consisting of one to five Archeology Aids or Technicians and one to five laborers or Volunteers In Parks (VIPs).
Assist with site recording procedures and tasks, including assisting in the preparation of archeological survey records such as site maps, photographs, surface artifact analysis forms, and field notes.
Assist with marine remote sensing operations in parks.
Assist with planning and logistics in advance of fieldwork, and then equipment maintenance, tracking, and light repair, as well as data organization, analysis and report writing after fieldwork has concluded.
Assist in analyzing general site features or artifact types, and specific attributes of each feature or artifact types, for one of the following categories of remains: Architectural features, Environmental context recording, Cargo-related features, Ceramics and other diagnostic artifacts. 
Physical Demands: Some assignments require sedentary work, but the majority necessitates strenuous exertion, including SCUBA diving, (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus), swimming, assisting in boat operations, mechanical and electrical machinery operations, stooping, bending, and exposure to sun, wind, rain and rough seas. Heavy items (e.g., equipment up to 60 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis. Diving is physically demanding. Divers will complete an annual physical fitness test which will be met by passing the blue card test as detailed in RM-4. Certified NPS divers will be permitted three hours of paid time per week to maintain the necessary physical condition. Work Environment: Virtually all field duties will be performed outdoors. Incumbent must be able to prepare for, and cope with uncomfortable weather and living conditions. Submerged cultural resource survey work requires extensive exposure to weather and salt water and oceanic fauna, some of which sting, bite, and can cause injury. Field assignments involve travel from main duty station with exposure to adverse weather conditions, temperature extremes and hazards associated with boat operations in remote open water environments and diving.
