As an employee of the National Park Service at Fort Stanwix National Monument, you will independently present a variety of walks, talks, and tours about the vast military and cultural history of the site and surrounding area. At the GS-4 park guide level, you will be provided outlines and staff-approved research on topics for use when providing various interpretive programs to our visiting public. Appointees will gain a basic understanding of the principles of interpretation, hone public speaking skills, and develop the ability to present a variety of programs to diverse groups.  In addition to the onsite visitor center and fort, the staff provides interpretive services at two additional New York State park sites a short distance away, Oriskany Battlefield and Steuben Memorial State Historic Sites.
At each of the staffed sites, work is performed both indoors and outdoors.  In addition to the interpretive programs, staff will work inside at one of the various visitor contact areas, including the main Visitor Center, providing orientation to the park and its programming, answering telephone inquiries, orientation to the area and other attractions, and staffing the cooperating association bookstore which includes operating a cash register and credit card machine, and associated accountability paperwork.  In addition, the park has an active living history program, requiring staff to work outdoors in 18th century clothing, with the potential of firing both muskets and artillery.
All selected candidates will be subject to a background investigation in order to determine suitability for federal employment.  Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year.  Appointments may be terminated at any time and can be extended if workload and funding allow.
Applicants must possess a valid state driver's license, and may require you to operate a government motor vehicle as part of your official duties in order to travel to offsite programs or alternate staffing locations.
Appointee may be assigned to work nights, early mornings, holidays, and weekends.  Occasional special programs require overtime hours.  Government housing is not available at this site.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Standing for long periods of time, walking for distances up to six miles daily, climbing and descending steep inclines, bending, and lifting moderately heavy items in a repetitive motion is required.  Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses, and repetitive nature of interpretive programs.  Extreme physical exertion may be required while performing search and rescue, wildland fire fighting and other emergency response duties.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Work is performed indoors at the visitors center as well as in outdoor areas resulting in exposure to extreme temperatures, rain, snow, wind and direct sunlight.
