Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Manager


Dovetail Cultural Resource Group (Dovetail) is currently accepting applications for a manager of our Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program. This full-time, salaried position with excellent benefits is based out of our Fredericksburg, Virginia office.  Over the past 10 years, Dovetail’s technical staff has grown to over 20 individuals including architectural historians, historians, archaeologists, and preservation technicians. The manager will be responsible for the day-to-day oversight of GIS needs for all projects, development and implementation of technical and organizational standards, oversight of graphics staff and both short- and long-term planning. Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinate Dovetail’s graphics staff and mapping products to assure that project needs are met and all work complies with applicable standards
  • Manage graphic budgets for small- and large-scale cultural resource projects
  • Development of scalable data management processes and standards
  • Coordination with clients to ascertain project needs and standards
  • Ensure timely development of project-related geographic data and graphics for project deliverables
  • Work with Dovetail’s principals and directors on long-term program goals and staffing needs
  • Serve as a liaison with GIS vendors to ensure proper acquisition, installation, operation and maintenance of GIS and graphics-related resources
  • Data preparation, training and oversight for mobile and desktop software
  • Solid knowledge of GIS required; CAD and direct program experience a plus

 Applicant must have a minimum of: a) a Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, or a related field and at least 10 years of hands-on experience dealing with geographic data in a professional setting and a GIS certificate; or, b) a Master’s degree in Geography, GIS, or a related field and at least five years of hands-on experience dealing with geographic data in a professional setting. Intimate knowledge of geographic data standards and experience implementing them is a must.

 The applicant must also have a minimum of five years of experience supervising staff on complex projects and a superior knowledge of ArcMap, TerraSync, CAD, Surfer, Word, Excel, and graphics editing procedures. They must be extremely organized, detail oriented, able to multitask, and meeting project deadlines and budget requirements.  While the position is primarily office based, some travel will be required.  The individual must be physically able to traverse difficult terrain in sometimes challenging conditions. Per diem and lodging will be provided on projects more than approximately 60 miles from Fredericksburg.
