The HR Customer Services and Solutions group is currently accepting applications to fill up to 1 temporary positions at Gateway National Recreation Area. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time. Appointments under this announcement are eligible for rehire and/or extension (when initial appointment is less than 1039 hours) if workload and funding allow. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years.  Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2015
Spend a season at Gateway National Recreation Area, a diverse and dynamic park in New York and New Jersey.   The park embraces a vibrant array of recreational activities and boasts a rich and varied cultural history from its Native American begininnings through colonial, military and current recreational uses.
The National Park Service manages over 12,000 acres of wildlife refuge, recreational park and cultural history sites that encompasses an array of interpretive themes, including coastal defense, maritime and aviation history as well as concepts of urban development and natural resource stewardship.
This announcement is being advertised under delegated examining procedures and is open to all U.S. citizens.
This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

This position is located at either the Jamaica Bay Unit in Brooklyn/Queens, NY or the Sandy Hook Unit, New Jersey of Gateway NRA.  The successful applicant will work in a team-oriented environment with a core responsibility of providing visitor services, including planning and presentation of public and programs in a variety of contexts, which will include spending a considerable amount of time in the field and on the water, kayaking in Jamaica Bay or waters near Sandy Hook and leading a cohort of interns in presenting public programs around a heart healthy and fitness theme.  Incumbent participates in day-to-day operation of  Your Park! Your Health! park-based fitness program and leads programming that focuses on orientation to Gateway NRA and the National Park system, and provision of visitor services, educational and recreational programming.  Works with program director to lead college age interns in daily activities of the YPYH program. Coordinates with partner organizations to achieve mutual goals.
Providing quality visitor experiences – Presents field and water based educational and recreational programming, including overnight camping, and formal and informal interpretive programs including orientation talks, historically or naturally themed education programs for varied diverse audiences and organized groups.  Primary responsibilities are to co-lead a wide menu of education and recreational programs for interns so that they may develop skills and knowledge to assist in leading similar programs for the public.  Duties are performed at locations designated by the park.  Incumbent will coordinate with supervision and act as lead of the interns in the completion of duties. Responds verbally to visitors inquiries for information, direction and guidance.
Conducting Basic Research - Conducts basic research using primary and secondary sources to gain information and understanding about the recreational, military, social, ecological and environmental history of Gateway National Recreation Area, and current issues, uses, amenities and visitor opportunities in the park.
Application of Research - Assists in the development of basic informative, interesting and visually attractive materials to promote the YPYH program. Works collaboratively in identifying the need for  interpretive products for natural, recreational or cultural programs.  Assist interns in learning to use interpretive techniques (such as metaphors, storytelling, analogies) to facilitate intellectual and/or emotional connections between audiences' interests and their surroundings.
Dealing with the public - Serve as front-line representative to greet customers and answers questions. Deals with the public, groups and park partner organizations with understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern and politeness. Public can include individuals who are distressed, confused, frustrated, difficult or even hostile. Relates effectively to people from varied cultural backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to diversity, race, gender, religion, people with disabilities and other individual differences. Visitor and park partnership contacts take place at various outdoor locations throughout the park as well as at visitor contact centers,during roving and patrols, and via telephone, mail, e-mail or new and social media venues.
Daily site operations - Works effectively individually and in team environment with supervisors and peers using established guidelines in the site's daily operations. Provides coaching and mentoring for intern staff , outreaches to communities, and uses new media to market and highlight programs and services. Ensures a safe environment for staff and visitors. Educates customers regarding rules, regulations, and safety concerns.  Direct customers with problems, questions, or complaints.  Assists in medical or other emergencies up to level of training.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:   The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:   The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
