JOB SUMMARY:

The HR Customer Services and Solutions group is currently accepting applications to fill up to 4 temporary positions at Effigy Mounds National Monument. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time. Appointments under this announcement are eligible for rehire and/or extension (when initial appointment is less than 1039 hours) if workload and funding allow. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years.  Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2015
Area Information: Effigy Mounds National Monument is located in the rugged bluffs three miles north of Marquette, Iowa, along the Mississippi River.  The 2,526 acre monument was established in 1949 to protect over 200 burial mounds in variety of shapes including effigies of bears and birds of prey.  The diverse mixture of forest, prairies, wetlands and rivers found today are remnants of the environment that once supported the ancient mound building cultures.
Housing with reasonable rates is available in nearby communities.  Basic community information is available through the McGregor – Marquette Chamber of Commerce (http://www.mcgreg-marq.org/site/) and Allamakee County Tourism and Economic Development Board (http://www.allamakeecounty.com/) websites.
This announcement is being advertised under delegated examining procedures and is open to all U.S. citizens.

Major Duties: This is a position of a non-supervisory Park Ranger (seasonal) who performs a variety of tasks associated with the use and management of park resources.  The purpose of the position is to supplement the permanent park ranger by performing duties assigned to:
1. Facilitate visitor understanding of park resources;
2. Facilitate visitor enjoyment of the monument and its resources;
3. Facilitate and induce visitor behavior consistent with resource protection and to gain friendly compliance with the laws and rules for safe use of the monument;
4. Encourage visitors to develop a sense of stewardship for the monument's resources.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:   The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:   The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
