Position ID
The archeology internship at Great Smoky Mountains National Park will provide an opportunity for interested and motivated individuals to develop skills related to the management of archeological resources. They will gain experience investigating and documenting archeological sites, identifying cultural materials and characterizing sites commonly found in the Appalachian Summit region, and proper handling of archeological materials. 
The selected individual will work closely with the Park Archeologist in conducting archeological site condition assessments, site investigation and documentation, and laboratory processing. The selected individual will also have the opportunity to work with the Park’s curator to accession, catalog, and curate archeological objects. 
Location Description
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is commonly referred as the “Crown Jewel of the Southern Appalachians,” and with good reason. The Great Smokies stand as THE most visited National Park, its biodiversity is unmatched in the eastern United States, and its boundaries contain an abundance of historic and prehistoric archeological sites. The Great Smokies are the ancestral home of the Cherokee. The Park’s cultural collections are extensive and include prehistoric objects, items of Cherokee association, historic photos, documents, textiles, farmstead implements, furniture, and tools. The natural history collection is also extensive with over 55,000 specimens.
Training Provided
Numerous National Park Service-related training sessions are available to the selected individual. First-Aid, CPR and other safety trainings are typically offered. Interns may have the opportunity to assist with work in other conservation disciplines.
Educational/Recreational Opportunities
The park itself boasts over half a million acres of hiking and adventure, with some 900 miles of maintained trails. The surrounding
communities contain shopping, dining, crafting, and cultural offerings as well.

Housing or Stipend Provided?
Housing units are typically shared, with 2 to 4 individuals per unit. Bedrooms are typically individual spaces but other living spaces such as kitchen, bathrooms, dining and living spaces are shared. The selected individual will be responsible, respectful, and accountable for his/her living space.
