Field Archaeologist for Southern California/Greater Los Angeles Area


Title: Field Archaeologist

Status: Part- to full-time

Travel: Required for some projects



Paleo Solutions is in its tenth year of operation providing paleontological and archaeological compliance and consulting services throughout California, and has recently expanded to provide paleontological services throughout the great basin, rocky mountain, and plains states as Rocky Mountain Paleo Solutions.

We have experience with many types of earth moving projects, including transportation, land development, oil and gas, renewable energy, water and landfills. Our services include paleontological and cultural resource surveys, construction monitoring, resource management, compliance documentation, environmental impact reports and NEPA documents, impact mitigation plans (development and implementation), third-party review, environmental awareness training programs, GIS and mapping.


Location and Hours

The work location for this position is the Greater Los Angeles area. Work hours will vary based on available projects, employee availability, and employee experience. While our goal is to provide employees with regular employment, hours are never guaranteed.  While some projects may only entail part-time hours, others may require work in excess of 50 hours per week.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience.



As a field archaeologist you will:

  •        Conduct field surveys
  •        Perform construction monitoring
  •        Implement impact mitigation measures for cultural resources
  •        Record data for scientific and compliance purposes
  •        Prepare daily progress reports for cultural resources
  •        Use GPS equipment (Garmin/Trimble) for field data collection
  •        Work independently or as part of a team
  •        Other duties as assigned 

Minimum Qualifications

  •       Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in anthropology, archaeology, historic archaeology, or      a related field
  •        Field experience or completed course work focused on archaeology of southern California
  •        Valid driver’s license, good driving record, reliable vehicle
  •        Computer literate
  •        Good verbal and writing skills

Preferred Qualifications

  •        Mission era experience
  •        40hr HAZWOPER
  •        Experience in the environmental consulting industry, preferably in southern California
  •      Construction monitoring experience

Working Conditions

Due to the nature of field work and the possibility of working in remote locations, the following are requirements for these positions:

·       Physiological:

o    moderate light lifting (30 lbs) with occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs

o    repetitive motion of upper body and limbs

o    reaching above shoulders

o    use of fingers (dexterity and normal sensation required, use of both hands required)

o    extensive walking over rough terrain

o    standing in limited spaces for extended periods

o    use of both legs (prosthesis acceptable if full mobility is demonstrated)

o    near sighted vision acceptable if vision correcting device is used

o    far-sighted vision acceptable if correctable to 20/40

o    depth perception, color vision and hearing normal (aid permitted)

o    ability to detect odors

o    clear speech

·       Environmental:

o    working indoors and outdoors

o    at high altitude

o    in excessive heat or cold

o    in excessive humidity or dampness

o    with excessive continuous noise

o    on slippery and uneven walking surfaces

o    working around machinery with moving parts

o    working around moving objects or vehicles

o    working in close proximity to others

o    protracted or irregular hours of work

o    working with shovels or other hand tools

o    riding in a helicopter or 4-wheel drive vehicle over rough terrain

o    All employees are required to wear appropriate safety protection
