JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position is under the direction of the Site Manager of Fulton Mansion State Historic Site.  The position collaborates with the Site Manager to develop site interpretation plans and programs and manage part-time employees.
This position coordinates or assists in all activities related to visitation, public programs, education, events, and marketing. The position will assist in conducting off-site and on-site historic interpretation, education and outreach.  This position will work with volunteers and the Friends of Fulton Mansion non-profit organization and serve as supervisor to student interns. 
The position will also manage or assist with special events, ceremonies and site rentals, collections management, site development and preparation of budgets, ensuring conformance with federal, state, and local directives applicable to the preservation and restoration of cultural resources entrusted to Fulton Mansion.
Complies with all agency policies and procedures.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
Conducts existing education programs and develops new ones.
Sustains and creates interpretive, public and volunteer interpretive programs relating to museum mission and exhibits.
Performs research connected with collections, exhibits, and historic site.
Prepares reports, develops and maintains administrative and interpretive records.
Assists in planning, designing, and preparing exhibits.
Participates in volunteer recruitment, training, and scheduling.
Assists in collections management.
Lectures to public and private groups and promotes interest in the museum and related activities.
Writes scholarly articles and edits membership newsletters.
Creates flyers, ads, and other print materials to advertise events.  Also updates web site and uses social media to market site’s activities.
Uses social media and new media as interpretive tools.
Manages student intern program and assists part-time employees with schedules and time sheets.
Performs other duties as assigned.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Required: graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in history, public history, museum studies, archeology, anthropology or closely related field.
Preferred MA degree in museum studies, public history, or American studies.
Experience:
Three years experience in at least two of the following:  (1) Museum or cultural resource interpretation; (2) exhibit fabrication work; (3) planning, developing, budgeting, and implementing educational programs and public events; (4) research and publication on subjects relating to historical topics.  Experience may have occurred concurrently.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
(1) Required to work forty hour week that includes flexible schedules, hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with days off other than Saturday, Sunday and holidays; (2) Required to travel with occasional overnight stays; (3) Required to respond to emergency situations; (4) Required to work with varied and diverse segments of the public as well as fellow employees; (5) Non-smoking work environment in all state buildings and vehicles.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge:
Knowledge of current museum interpretation methods and strategies;
Knowledge of pedagogy as it relates to informal education;
Knowledge of professional museum practices as they relate to artifact collections;
Knowledge of the fundamentals of cultural resource management and protection;
Knowledge of exhibit development.
Skills:
Skill in conducting historical research;
Skill in written and verbal communication in English;
Skill in using personal computers and associated software;
Skill in public speaking;
Skill in designing ads and exhibit lay-outs
Skill in managing personnel.
Abilities:
Ability to work in an environment with distractions and frequent changes in priorities;
Ability to use sound judgment and perform assigned duties without continual supervision;
Ability to work with all age groups;
Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with department’s safety program;
Ability to work independently and as a team member.
