The HR Customer Services and Solutions group is currently accepting applications to fill up to (5) temporary positions at Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park, NJ. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time. Appointments under this announcement are eligible for rehire and/or extension (when initial appointment is less than 1039 hours) if workload and funding allow.  Anticipated Entry on Duty: June 2015
 
Paterson is the third largest city in New Jersey.  The National Park is located within Paterson's Great Falls Historic District where resources abound to illustrate and interpret the birth of the diverse water-powered industries and the people who lived and worked here.  Work locations are located within the National Park boundary as well as locations in the historic district.  These areas include Overlook Park, Upper Raceway Park, Mary Ellen Kramer Park, the Welcome Center and the Paterson Museum.  Duties involve prolonged standing in/outdoors, walking distances of 2-4 miles per day. Other duties include walking on paved and unpaved uneven surfaces and speaking to groups of 20-80 people outside in a noisy urban environment. Incumbents will assist visitors with disabilities to the extent of their abilities and training.   Work may be performed in outdoor areas resulting in exposure to extreme temperatures, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight.   Tours are conducted rain or shine in weather conditions typical of the northeastern New Jersey. Work indoors and on a computer is also expected.

This position is located at Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park, Paterson, NJ.  .  Home to one of the nation's largest and most spectacular waterfalls, the water of the Passaic River was harnessed to power new industries and played a key role in shaping the American Industrial Revolution and building the U.S. economy.  The successful applicant will work in a team-oriented environment to assist with the day to day operation of the interpretive division at the park.  This includes providing visitor orientation and information at various locations throughout the park and historic district.  Provides information regarding park program offerings as well as programs offered through other local national park sites and partners.  Provides tours through the park and historic district (1.5 mile, 1.5 hour program) and at the Paterson Museum.   Performs opening and closing procedures at the Welcome Center.  Staffs sales outlets at park bookstore, operating a cash register and conducting retail transactions.  Operates a cash register or credit card machine to accomplish work in business operation. Takes inventory and re-stocks the bookstore.  Collect cash or other payments in high volume sales operation.  Staffs a visitor center desk.   Provides statistical information.  Answers telephones and takes messages, following up when necessary.  Conducts searches for information or forms on the Internet,  park publications or prepared primary and secondary sources.    Uses office equipment such as photocopier, computer and laminator.  Prints and stocks venues with park publications.  Assists in writing interpretive content.  Follows standard operating procedures and supervisory guidance in conducting daily tasks. The National Park Service will be working with the Paterson Museum to provide visitor services at the Welcome Center and the Paterson Museum.  Since the National Park accomplishes much of its work through partnerships on a daily basis, it is expected that the incumbent will be professional in all dealings with the public and institutional partners at all times.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Standing for long periods of time, walking for distances up to six miles daily, climbing and descending steep inclines, bending, and lifting moderately heavy items in a repetitive motion is required.  Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses, and repetitive nature of interpretive programs.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Work is performed indoors at the visitors center as well as in outdoor areas resulting in exposure to extreme temperatures, rain, snow, wind and direct sunlight.
