The Northern Rockies Servicing Human Resources Office (NR SHRO) is currently seeking applicants to fill a temporary Musuem Technician, GS-1016-05 position at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.  Appointments are limited to 1039 hours in an employee's service year. Seasonal work is expected to start on June 14 and last through mid December. Appointments may be terminated at any time and can be extended if workload and funding allow.  Positions offer rehire eligibility for subsequent appointments, provided the employee has not exceeded 1039 hours of work in a twelve month period and has achieved an acceptable level of performance.
AREA/HOUSING INFORMATION: Crow Agency, Montana (pop 1,552) is located adjacent to the Little Bighorn Battlefield NM in South Central Montana within the Crow Indian Reservation. It is 18 miles south of shopping and medical facilities are available in Hardin, Montana (pop 3,384) 18 miles south of Crow Agency. Montana's largest city, Billings (pop 100,000), is 60 miles northwest of Crow Agency via Interstate-90 and has major shopping facilities. Sheridan, Wyoming (pop 17,000), 70 miles south via Interstate-90, also has major shopping facilities. Elevation is 3,300 feet. The area has a semi-arid climate with a diversified landscape of contrasting formations, prairie upland. Temperatures range from 100 degrees in the summer to below zero in the winter. Elementary School (K-6), Middle School, and High School (7-12th grade) options are located in Hardin. Abundant recreational opportunities (hiking, fishing, hunting, skiing) are available in the region, including within Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area located 45 miles from Crow Agency.

The incumbent will serve as a Museum Technician for little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument’s Resource Management division. The position will work closely with the Museum Curator and Librarian. Duties will include conducting internal and external research using archives and museum collections to provide answers to research requests, prepares objects for display, and assist with the installation, repair, and rehabilitation of exhibits. Provides updates to databases and adds metadata to digital resources and perform clerical duties and tasks to manage the library. The incumbent will provide routine cleaning of objects according to established standards and implements museum maintenance and housekeeping schedules. The position will also perform routine research for catalog records, exhibits, and other purposes as assigned, and provide answers and information to park visitors.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required.  Heavy items, such as boxes and collection items up to 50 pounds, must be lifted or moved on a frequent basis.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Most of the work is performed in a museum environment of exhibit and storage areas and offices.  Occasional work with materials that are dusty or stored with protective chemicals may require the use of dust masks, gloves, or other protective devices.  The incumbent may occasionally perform field work in adverse weather conditions.
