Maya Commoner Field School in Belize, Deadline Extended for Summer 2015

May 21 - June 18, 2015
Application Deadline: Extended to May 15, 2015

The Rio Bravo Archaeological Survey provides college-level instruction in archaeological field methodology within a state-of-the-art research project at an ancient Maya commoner site in northwestern Belize. For 20 years, RBAS has been providing valuable insight into the lives of common people during the Late Classic Maya period of Belize. Our current focus includes ancient Maya commoner settlement patterns, ceremonialism, and water management, with an emphasis on geo-archaeological research (soils and ancient botanical remains). The 2015 season will be investigating an extremely unusual ritual ballcourt, built by and for Maya commoners, and the rubble remains of a small house where a conch shell cache was discovered last season. The settlement-- set in a remote, protected rainforest in Belize--- mostly consists of covered mounds under 2m tall. Come help us explore the complexity and sophistication of Maya commoner life during the turbulent end of the Classic period.
