Principal Investigator - Archaeology

Orbis Environmental Consulting is seeking a Principal Investigator interested in participating in archaeological projects throughout the Midwest and Great Lakes states. Orbis is a growing environmental consulting company that values responsible resource management of important ecological and cultural resources to meet the needs of a modern world.

 Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Direct archaeological surveys according to applicable state and/or federal guidelines and accepted professional standards in coordination with other Orbis staff.
  • Supervise crew of archaeological technicians.
  • Prepare and maintain field documentation including, daily progress records, site inventory forms, photographs, GPS data, and other necessary materials.
  • Perform artifact analysis.
  • Report writing.
  • Client relations.
  • Contribute to proposals, marketing, and business development.

Basic Requirements:

·         Master’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field.

·         Minimum 2-5 years’ professional archaeological supervisory experience in the Midwest and Great Lakes states.

·         Clear and professional communication skills.

·         Demonstrated technical writing experience

·         Must be able to work independently and interact positively with project managers, landowners, and technicians.

·         Willingness to work outdoors in a variety of locations and weather conditions.

·         Available for travel throughout the Midwest and Great Lakes states, potentially for extended periods.

·         Experience using GPS and a Total Station to document field data.

·     Experience with the National Historic Preservation Act and other cultural resource management laws and regulatory processes.

·         Valid driver’s license.

·         Must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship.

 Preferred Requirements

·   Experience with GIS software.

·   Experience collaborating with other environmental professionals in multi-disciplinary environmental survey – wetland, wildlife, e.g.

Demonstrated project management experience across a range of type and scope.

Salary is commensurate with experience. Projects may occur throughout the Midwest and Great Lakes states, and options are available for your base location. The position is flexible and can range seasonally to full time depending on applicant’s abilities, and work load preference.
