Your Opportunity:
Participates in all aspects of archaeological fieldwork including assessments and Phase I, II and III excavations
Your Duties:
Excavating and recording controlled surface collections (when conditions permit), shovel tests, excavation units, and cultural features
Recording and evaluating soils using color (Munsell), texture, and inclusions
Orienteering using a compass, USGS topographic maps, and evaluating landforms and environmental clues at the Phase I level
Assist with setting up a site grid, datum, and excavations units
Mapping site plans and individual shovel tests, units and features in plan and profile, using engineers’ scale, the grid coordinate system, and methods such as triangulation, and a drawing grid
Identifying historic and prehistoric artifacts
Following standard collection procedures
Identifying cultural features
Cleaning and preparing site surfaces for mapping and photography
Serving as laboratory assistant when work is available indoors
Serving as a report-production assistant when work is available indoors
Keeping supervisors apprised of progress and/or problems, as necessary
Your Capabilities and Credentials:
Bachelors degree in archaeology/anthropology, preferred
At least 1 season of a field school
