INTRODUCTION:

The Collections Assistant works under the guidance of and reports to the Collections Manager. The position is responsible for assisting the Collections Manager with the daily management and curation of Tribal and federally owned collections (Bonneville Power Administration/Bureau of Reclamation), associated records, photographs, and other archival materials received and held at the STI preservation’s repository. Collections housed within the STI preservation repository include: archaeological artifacts and cultural material, associated object and cultural history documentation, photographs, audio/visual, and archival documents.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties include but are not limited to the acquisition, processing, inventory, movement, and use of the collection, ensuring that all collection materials are handled in a safe and practical manner, stored appropriately, and documented and tracked according to museum standards.


The Collections Assistant will be responsible for the following:

  • Assist in the processing of objects recovered in archaeological investigations and/or donated by enrolled members within Reservation boundaries
  • Performs cataloging, data entry, and condition reporting of new acquisitions and collections backlog
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining object records and associated documentation
  • Assist with the annual inventory and reconciliation of all federally associated objects and records
  • Assist with the storage and rehousing of various collections materials
  • Digitizing archival documents, photographs, and audio/visual materials into stable media
  • Assists with the implementation of Integrated Pest Management and housekeeping within the repository
  • Assist with monitoring and documenting environmental conditions in collection storage and work areas (i.e. light, relative humidity, temperature, dust, pests, gaseous pollutants, and other inherent vice.)
  • Participates in information gathering for the collection management report due at the end of the year, as per BPA/BOR contract
  • Assist with educational programming and responding to research inquiries

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license, good driving record, and be Tribally insurable
  • Experience working with original collection materials in a museum, library, or archives environment
  • Working knowledge of standard museum collections management practices and procedures, including object handling and cataloging
  • Ability to work independently, self-motivated, and willing to follow complex instructions
  • Ability to multi-task, problem solve, attention to detail, and communicate effectively, both verbally and in written documents
  • Ability and willingness to learn and devise new methods of records management
  • Ability to operate a computer and commonly used computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Ability to lift boxes and objects up to 50 lbs                                            

PREFERRED: 

  •  Education: Bachelor’s Degree or higher in museum studies or related field (Anthropology, Archaeology, history, or Native American Studies)
  • In depth knowledge and at least 6 months to 1 year of museum collections management experience, anthropology collections a plus
  • Prior coursework, training, experience, or knowledge of archaeological methods, artifact processing, and living cultures, especially of the Northwest region.
  • Experience using collections databases, especially Re:discovery Proficio, and digital imaging equipment and photography techniques

Other:

Must have the ability to work in various outdoor conditions and temperatures; indoor temperature of 65*F.  The position may require the ability to lift, bend, stand and sit for long periods, and carry up to 50 lbs.
