Dovetail Cultural Resource Group (Dovetail) is currently accepting applications for a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technician. This full-time position is based out of our Fredericksburg, Virginia office. Over the past 10 years, Dovetail’s technical staff has grown to over 30 individuals including architectural historians, historians, archaeologists, and preservation technicians. The GIS technician will report directly to the GIS manager and will be responsible for day to day GIS needs for both the archaeological and architectural history staff. Duties will include:
- Ensure timely production of
project-related geographic data and graphics for project deliverables
- Development of graphics for field staff
- Production of graphics to assist project
management teams in project coordination and meetings
- Internal and external coordination of
GIS based file acquisition/submission
- Assist GIS Manager in tracking and
management of hand-held GIS units
- Assist GIS Manager as a liaison with GIS
vendors to ensure proper acquisition, installation, operation and
maintenance of GIS and graphics-related resources
- Data preparation, training and oversight
for mobile and desktop software
- Solid knowledge of GIS required; CAD and
direct program experience a plus
Applicant must have a minimum of: a) a Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, or a related field and at least two years of hands-on experience dealing with geographic data in a professional setting. A GIS certificate and at least five years of hands-on experience dealing with geographic data in a professional and/or cultural resource setting is desirable. Cultural Resource Management experience is a plus.
The applicant must also have a minimum of two years of experience and solid working knowledge of ArcMap, TerraSync, ArcPad, Trimble hand-held units, CAD, Surfer, Word, Excel, Access and graphics editing procedures. The ideal applicant should be extremely organized, detail oriented, able to multitask, and meet project deadlines and budget requirements. While the position is primarily office based, some travel will be required. The individual must be physically able to traverse difficult terrain in sometimes challenging conditions and have a valid driver’s license. Per diem and lodging will be provided on projects more than approximately 60 miles from Fredericksburg.
