Arch Field Director for On-Call Projects - Southern and Central California


Title: Archaeological Field Director
Employment Status: Part to Full Time
Compensation: Commensurate with Experience. 
RSP is currently seeking an Archaeological Field Director to manage on-call task orders throughout the state of California. The Field Director will be based out of the Los Angeles area, with some travel required. Relocation will not be reimbursed. Task orders under our current on-call contracts have included: records searches, field surveys, monitoring, and production of technical deliverables (reports and GIS data). This position includes performing and directing multiple types of tasks and managing several small projects in various stages of completion. 

The successful applicant will have demonstrated professional experience conducting archaeological records searches and field surveys, both independently and as a crew chief/field director. GIS experience is also required, in order to prepare and/or QA/QC maps, and maintain geodatabases following established schema. Prior technical reporting experience and QA/QC of others' writing is also part of this position. Finally, excellent organizational skills are essential to this position, as our on-call task orders are high volume and time-sensitive.  
Minimum Qualifications

•    Master’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, historic archaeology, or a related field
•    Minimum of two years of professional CRM experience as a field archaeologist, including construction monitoring experience
•    Professional GIS certification and/or two years’ experience working with ESRI GIS software
•    Technical writing expertise for archaeological and paleontological resource management reports and monitoring reports
•    Field experience or completed field school focused on archaeology of Southern California
•    Valid driver’s license, good driving record, reliable vehicle

Preferred Qualifications

•    Valid HAZWOPER 40HR Certificate (RSP will not reimburse for refresher course)
•    Professional GIS certification and/or two years’ experience working with ESRI GIS software
•    Cross-trained in paleontology

Working Conditions include the possibility of performing fieldwork in remote locations. Therefore, the following physiological requirements are necessary for these positions:

•    Moderate light lifting (30 lbs) with occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs
•    Repetitive motion of upper body and limbs
•    Reaching above shoulders
•    Use of fingers (dexterity and normal sensation required, use of both hands required)
•    Extensive walking over rough terrain
•    Standing in limited spaces for extended periods
•    Use of both legs (prosthesis acceptable if full mobility is demonstrated)
•    Near sighted vision acceptable if vision correcting device is used
•    Far-sighted vision acceptable if correctable to 20/40
•    Depth perception, color vision and hearing normal (aid permitted)
•    Ability to detect odors
•    Clear speech

Environmental Conditions will include working indoors and outdoors and may involve the following working conditions: 

•    High altitude
•    Excessive heat or cold
•    Excessive humidity or dampness
•    Excessive continuous noise
•    Slippery and uneven walking surfaces
•    Working around machinery with moving parts
•    Working around moving objects or vehicles
•    Working in close proximity to others
•    Protracted or irregular hours of work
•    Working with shovels or other hand tools
•    Riding in a helicopter or 4-wheel drive vehicle over rough terrain
